Fragment of a formal court robe (chaofu)-type weaving. Gold brocaded silk, late 18th to early 19th century.
Dim.: WxH 69x29cm. Mounted on green cotton on foamboard (75x35cm).The robe was cut and altered in Tibet to become part of an altar frontal or canopy. The resulting patchwork is typical for Tibet.
It didn't matter that the jigsaw puzzle didn't fit anymore as long as the result was harmonious and pleasing to the eye.
The walking dragons were originaly located at the lower end of the robe whereous the – looking lost – claw and dragon head above it came from the chest/shoulder section.
The gold threads are in good condition and the colours are still strong.
