A northern elm winetable with remains of the original brown-purple lacquer finish. Shanxi province, around 1800. This type of table normally doesn't have a distinguishable front or back side. They could thus be placed in open space as well as against a wall. The last option seems to have had the upper hand as in many cases the legs are weathered on just one side; the side that has been in contact with a damp wall for a long period of time- as with this particular table.
