Ancestorpainting depicting 6 generations situated in a virtual courtyard. On the forground servants are bringing in gifts. The deers and cranes are symbolical: these animals are believed to escort the human souls to eternal life. At the upper part of the painting there’s an altartable with offerings (poultry, fish, a pig's head and steamed buns). Shanxi province, mid 19th century. Painted on preparated canvas, hanging on two (replaced) rods. It’s remarkable that all figures are painted in Ming style. this and other details -such as the colour scheme used- suggest it might be a direct copy of an older painting. Condition: some stains, especially along the sides and at the top end (is the outside of the scroll when rolled ups so more vulnerable). Some small holes and tears. LxW: 182x115cm.
