Large size portrait showing four generations of a well-to-do family. The painting is better than average with much detail, vivid colors and accents in gold. All of the men depicted had a second wive, except for the poor fellow in the black coat who had to be satisfied with just one. Two of the men wear badges which indicate they were officials and another must have been a man of merit because he is wearing an imperial yellow coat. Their wives are easy to identify; they are the ones with the elaborate hats. There are several repaired dammaged spots in this painting but the condition on the whole is not too bad. Shanxi province, ca. 1850. Canvas, remounted. Dim. LxB 240x164cm (scroll) / 183x147cm (painting).
