A pair of goldlacquered cabinets, Shanxi province, Pingyao style, Qianlong period (1736-1795). The painting on the front is heavily restored, one could say repainted. Still everywhere parts of the original painting are incorporated in it and one took great care to follow lines and motives of the old painting. The problem with this type of lacquerwork is that it is manytimes strongly darkened and, especially the gold, faded and worn. One can still see what kind of representation it has been, but the glitter and glamour of gold on red has gone. One knows what it must have looked like, can follow the lines, can see what once must have been shining in gold. A temptation that cannot be stopped takes hold, just a few lines! and the whole proces is started. Like this most of this kind of cabinets get repainted. One side of one cabinet is wharped. One bottom replaced. One shelfboard replaced and the other partially. One part of a back is replaced. The hardware is replaced mainly using old parts. Dim.: WxDxH 118x55x191cm
